It was perfect timing for the release of "Margot at the Wedding." The release date either had a lot to do with the Oscars or because of holiday season.
Everyone has some sort of family drama, Most people experience it at a family gathering like Thanksgiving.
So, saving this film's release date for the holiday helps us to relate to the characters and their on going family drama-that maybe happened to us over some turkey and pumpkin pie.
We all know that director Noah Baumbach has some family issues that were played out in his 2005 movie "The Squid and The Whale" so perhaps "Margot at the Wedding" also is a look into his past.
The movie has a lot to do with family dynamics. Margot and her estranged sister Pauline. Margot and her son Claude. Pauline and her fiance Malcolm and so on.
Margot and Claude leave Manhattan to go to Pauline's wedding. Margot decided to go to Pauline's wedding because her marriage is crumbling and her lover lives a couple miles from Pauline's house. Pauline lives in their childhood home which is constantly being compared to how it used to look, this correlates with the sisters discussing how each of them treats the other one.
What we know after watching this movie is that the sisters can fight all day about who is the meanest and who is the asshole when each sister makes choices based on past pain and current fear.
what we don't know is why there is a pig being slaughtered and why Pauline has to poop her pants. Sure, we can think of some metaphoric/symbolic answer but really its not necessary to.
In the end "Margot at the Wedding" is Baumbach's way to find some sort of peace with his past but come on making a movie is way more expensive than getting some good old fashion therapy.
If you really think you need to see this movie wait for DVD but otherwise save the drama for your mama and skip it.
